Our thematically arranged offer is therefore aimed at all those who want to use every opportunity for research and discovery with enthusiasm and joy.

There are over 13 million objects in 37 scientific collections at the University of Hamburg and the LIB - from A for anatomy to Z for zoology. Some of the objects are hundreds or even thousands of years old, others were created only a few decades ago.

Since autumn 2018, interesting new collection objects have been regularly published here. In the coming months you can discover many of them for the first time on this portal.

We are very pleased to welcome you here and cordially invite you to continue discovering the interesting, exciting and sometimes even bizarre objects in the future. In the name of all our employees who have implemented this project together, we wish you lots of fun in your research and discovery!

Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change

Ancient whale skeletons, cats of prey and apes. Rays and frogfishes. Birds, eggs and feathers. Ancient earthworms and cnidarians, scorpions and spiders, snails and molluscs, amphibians, reptiles, insects and butterflies next to glowing crystals and sparkling gems.

Botany

200-year-old plants, ferns, mushrooms and mosses, fruits, seeds and woods from over 10,000 plant species from Europe, South America, India and Africa. Medicinal herbs, medicinal and aromatic plants and an ancient strangler fig from the tropical rainforest of Cameroon. Refined raw materials such as coffee, cocoa and rubber, oil fruits, jute and tobacco, as well as a living collection of several hundred strains of microalgae, which are regarded as aquatic precursors of land plants.

Business management

3,500 books owned by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Curt Eisfeld, who was the first professor of business administration to teach at our university from 1928 to 1962. Most of these books date from the first thirty years of the 20th century and their age and their totality, their international orientation and diversity gives us a comprehensive insight into the economic history of this period.

Humanities

The historical plaster casts of antique sculptures and medieval Bible manuscripts, rare glass slides, projectors and photographs, tapes, paintings, reliefs and sculptures, biographies of artists, books, catalogues and encyclopaedias about architecture, art and works of art from the early days to the 21st century are important testimonies to the history of art, our city and our university.

MIN

Historical images of moons, stars, and planets, comets, meteors, and meteorites. Mathematical, chemical, and technical models, physical, chemical, astronomical, and navigation instruments, refractors, reflecting telescopes, astrographs, and hydrographic maps of the sea due to the Valdivia expedition (1898-1899), ancient and modern computing devices, mainframes, computers, laptops, smartphones, and the Telefunken trackball, which was the first mouse in the history of computers.

Medicine

Moulages – life like wax replicas of symptoms of diseases on the skin, preserved preparations and three-dimensional models from neuropathology, historical instruments from the field of medical technology and interesting evidence from medical social history are among the highlights of the collections of the Eppendorf University Hospital, along with the authentically restored autopsy room.

Law

Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy, one of the most important scholars in the history of our Faculty of Law, founder of the Hamburg Institute for Foreign Policy, judge at the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague and from 1931 delegate to the League of Nations, left us a collection of several thousand articles from the international press of the first third of the 20th century on constitutional and international law.
