Schmidt Museum
The Schmidt Museum is dedicated to the work of the Estonian optician Bernhard Schmidt (1879-1935), an optician specialised in astronomical optics, who had his workshop at Hamburg Observatory. Here, in 1930, he succeeded in inventing a completely new kind of reflecting telescope, which, today, is known as a Schmidt Camera or Schmidt Telescope, and revolutionised astronomical photography from the mid 20th century onwards. In addition to instruments and the workshop tools, the original Schmidt telescope and models of the Large Hamburg Schmidt Telescope as well as scientific documents that he left behind are on display at the museum.
Selected objects from this collection will soon be displayed here
